igarete, in Romanian usually written țigarete (without diacritics igarete), refers to cigarettes, the hand-rolled or machine-rolled tobacco products designed for smoking. A typical cigarette consists of finely cut tobacco wrapped in cigarette paper, with a filter at the mouth end. The tobacco blend may include burley, flue-cured, and Oriental varieties, and it may contain additives such as humectants, flavorings, and burn promoters.

When lit, the cigarette burns to produce smoke that is inhaled through the mouth and lungs. Nicotine is the primary addictive component, while smoke carries tar, carbon monoxide, and numerous chemicals, including known carcinogens. Regular use increases the risk of cancers of the lung, mouth and throat, cardiovascular disease, respiratory illness, and stroke. Secondhand smoke also poses health risks to nearby nonsmokers.

Regulatory frameworks vary but typically restrict youth access, require health warnings on packaging, and limit advertising; many countries impose taxes and smoking bans in workplaces and public spaces. Historically, cigarettes gained global prevalence in the 20th century and remain widely used, though public health campaigns and regulations have reduced consumption in many areas. E-cigarettes and other nicotine-delivery systems are related but distinct categories.
