Időtoltás, commonly written idtoltás, is a concept describing the deliberate postponement or shifting of events in time relative to a reference timeline. It can refer to the act of delaying playback of a recorded program or to applying a time offset to data streams. The term is formed from idő (time) and tolás (pushing or moving). In standard Hungarian the form időtoltás is more common, while idtoltás may appear in informal usage or transcription errors.

In broadcasting and media, időtoltás enables time-shifted viewing, where a viewer can watch a program after its original broadcast by using a digital video recorder or a streaming service that stores and replays content. This delay is typically a matter of minutes to several hours, depending on the system.

In computing and telecommunications, time-shifting refers to delaying data processing or aligning streams to compensate for latency and jitter. Buffering, clock synchronization, and timestamp adjustments are common techniques. Time offsets are also used when aggregating events from different sources or when converting timestamps between time zones.

Limitations of time-shifting include potential metadata drift, additional storage requirements, and privacy considerations when recordings are stored. Applications range from consumer entertainment to enterprise data management and network engineering.
