Historically, organized sport grew through local clubs in the 19th and 20th centuries. Today most idrætsforeninger are affiliated with national sport federations and, through the umbrella organization Danmarks Idrætsforbund, participate in coordinated development, safety standards and competition structures. They often cooperate with municipalities to access facilities and program funding.

Governance typically rests with an annual general meeting and a volunteer board. Clubs employ or train coaches and mentors, and maintain youth programs, teams and recreational activities. They follow national rules for their sport and adhere to codes for child protection, safety, and governance.

Activities cover training, local leagues and tournaments, talent development, and inclusive programs for various age groups and abilities. Many clubs provide social and educational activities, promoting health, teamwork, and community engagement.

Funding comes from membership fees, municipal subsidies, sponsorships, and sometimes national or private grants. Clubs balance budgets with facility costs, equipment, and coach education, often relying on volunteers to run operations.

Impact and challenges: Idrætsforeninger contribute to public health, social cohesion and youth development. They face aging membership, fluctuating funds, governance demands, and competition from commercial fitness providers, while adapting to digital tools and inclusive practices.
