Identitybinding is a concept in computer security and identity management that refers to the association of an identity with a specific credential or a set of credentials. This binding ensures that an identity can only be asserted or authenticated using the authorized means. Essentially, it links a digital identity, such as a username or a user ID, to the proof of that identity, like a password, a digital certificate, a biometric signature, or a hardware security key.

The primary purpose of identitybinding is to prevent impersonation and unauthorized access. When an identity is securely bound to its credentials, it becomes significantly harder for an attacker to falsely claim another user's identity. This mechanism is fundamental to authentication systems, where the system verifies that the entity presenting itself is indeed the one it claims to be, by checking if the presented credentials match the bound credentials for that identity.

Different systems employ various methods for identitybinding. For instance, in public key infrastructure (PKI), a public key is bound to an identity through a digital certificate issued by a trusted certificate authority. In multi-factor authentication (MFA), an identity is bound to multiple types of credentials, increasing security by requiring more than one form of proof. The strength and security of identitybinding are crucial for the overall security posture of any system that relies on user authentication and authorization.
