Identity-based is a term used in information security and computing to describe systems and methods that base cryptographic keys, credentials, or access decisions on a user’s recognized identity, such as an email address or user ID. It appears in two main strands: identity-based cryptography and identity-based authentication and access control. The concept emphasizes leveraging known identifiers to streamline management, provisioning, or authorization.

In identity-based cryptography, identity-based encryption (IBE) allows a user’s public key to be derived from a known identifier, with a trusted authority issuing the corresponding private key. The idea, proposed by Adi Shamir and later developed in practical schemes (notably Boneh–Franklin), can simplify key distribution by removing the need for traditional certificates. However, it creates a key escrow risk because the trusted authority can derive any user’s private key. Security rests on cryptographic assumptions such as bilinear maps and related hardness results, and implementations must address key revocation and trust management.

In identity-based authentication and access control, identity-based methods rely on user attributes or identifiers processed by identity providers. Protocols such as OAuth, SAML, and OpenID Connect underpin many single sign-on deployments, enabling centralized authentication and delegated authorization across services. Advantages include streamlined user experience and centralized policy enforcement; drawbacks involve privacy concerns, potential single points of failure, and the need to secure tokens and identity infrastructure.

Applications of the identity-based concept span encryption, authentication, and access control. Organizations weigh the trade-offs between convenience, security, and control, often combining identity-based approaches with traditional methods to meet specific governance and risk requirements.
