In this concept, each estate—called a hálde—governs itself through a local assembly and an elected steward, while representatives from all háldes participate in the Háldic Council to coordinate common interests such as defense, trade, and customary law.

The name is fictional within the setting; it is said to derive from an Old Norse-inspired root “hald” meaning to hold or possess, plus a pluralizing suffix similar to -des. In real-world linguistics the term has no established origin.

The political structure emphasizes autonomy and mutual aid. Each hálde maintains internal courts and a code of conduct; the Háld Assembly works by consensus, with plans or alliances needing broad support. Emergency defense can be coordinated rapidly through the council.
