Hyperfocus refers to an intense, sustained pattern of attention directed at a task or activity, often with minimal awareness of surroundings. It is not a formal clinical term but is widely discussed in popular and clinical literature about attention and ADHD.

It occurs most commonly in individuals with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but it can appear in people without ADHD as well. It also is reported in autism spectrum conditions and among highly motivated individuals.

Characteristics include long durations of focus, high engagement, selective attention to stimuli related to the task, and difficulty disengaging or shifting tasks. External interruptions are often ignored, and the person may lose track of time.

Benefits include deep problem solving and rapid progress on a favored task. Drawbacks include neglect of other responsibilities, sleep disruption, and the risk of burnout when the focus cannot be ended on schedule.

Mechanisms are not fully understood, but involve variations in executive control and reward processing that make certain tasks disproportionately rewarding. Hyperfocus can be triggered by highly interesting or intrinsically rewarding activities.

Managing hyperfocus involves external structure: setting timers and reminders, scheduling breaks, using environmental cues, pacing work, and arranging accountability. For some, balancing interests with broader tasks and sleep hygiene can help.

Research on hyperfocus is limited and mostly observational; it is not a formal diagnosis, and its prevalence and impact vary across individuals.
