Hyperexsudation refers to an excessive or abnormal outpouring of fluid from blood vessels into surrounding tissues or body cavities. This process is a common manifestation of inflammation, where increased vascular permeability allows plasma proteins and fluid to leak out of the capillaries. The accumulation of this fluid, known as exudate, can lead to swelling (edema) and can be clear, cloudy, or contain cellular debris depending on the underlying cause.

The causes of hyperexsudation are varied and can range from acute injuries like burns or infections to chronic conditions such as heart failure or kidney disease. In inflammatory responses, mediators like histamine and cytokines play a crucial role in increasing capillary permeability. The composition of the exudate can provide diagnostic clues; for instance, serous exudate is typically clear and watery, while purulent exudate is thick and contains pus, indicating a bacterial infection. Hemorrhagic exudate contains blood.

Management of hyperexsudation focuses on addressing the underlying cause. Treatment may involve anti-inflammatory medications, antibiotics for infections, diuretics for fluid overload, or measures to improve circulation. Monitoring the extent and characteristics of the exudate is important for assessing the progression of disease and the effectiveness of treatment. In some cases, surgical intervention may be necessary to drain large accumulations of fluid.
