Hymiöt, also known as emoticons, are typographical representations of facial expressions or objects used in electronic communication. They are created by combining punctuation marks, letters, and numbers to convey emotion, tone, or to add visual emphasis. The term "hymiö" is Finnish for emoticon.

The concept of emoticons originated in the early days of online communication, with the earliest known usage attributed to Scott Fahlman in 1982. He proposed using :-) and :-( to distinguish between serious and humorous posts on a university bulletin board. Since then, a vast array of hymiöt have been developed and adopted across various platforms, including text messages, emails, and social media.

Hymiöt serve several purposes. They can help to clarify the intended tone of a message, preventing misunderstandings in text-based communication where non-verbal cues are absent. For instance, a winking hymiö ;-) can indicate a joke or sarcasm. They can also add personality and expressiveness to otherwise plain text, making communication more engaging and human.
