Hydronyms are proper names given to bodies of water, including rivers, lakes, seas, oceans, bays, springs, and other hydrological features. The field that studies them is hydronymy, a branch of toponymy or onomastics. Hydronyms are found in all languages and often reflect geographic characteristics, historical events, or cultural associations.

Common hydronyms include the Nile, the Mississippi, the Volga, the Yangtze, and the Rhine. Seas such as the Baltic Sea, the Black Sea, the Mediterranean, and the Red Sea are also hydronyms. Names may derive from descriptive terms (White River), from nearby settlements (Hudson River), mythic or ancestral associations, or older language roots that have been modified by contact with other languages.

Hydronyms preserve linguistic history and can reveal patterns of settlement, migration, language contact, and colonization. They also pose challenges for standardization in multilingual contexts, where different languages may render a single water body with different spellings or names.

Researchers document hydronyms in dictionaries, gazetteers, old maps, and linguistic corpora; methods combine philology, historical linguistics, and geography. Etymology, phonology, and semantic analysis are commonly used to interpret and classify hydronyms, tracing their evolution across time and contact among language communities.
