Hydroinformatics is an interdisciplinary field at the intersection of hydrology, water resources engineering, computer science, and information technology that develops and applies computational tools and information systems to manage water-related data and decision making. It encompasses data collection, storage, processing, modeling, visualization, and decision support for water systems. Core activities include building hydrological and hydraulic models, integrating GIS and remote sensing data, and applying data analytics, machine learning, and optimization to forecast, plan, and operate water resources.

It enables weather and streamflow forecasting, flood risk assessment, flood early warning, urban drainage and sewer network management, reservoir operation, hydropower optimization, groundwater modeling, and environmental flow assessments. It emphasizes data interoperability, standardized formats, open data, and web-based platforms. Methods used include numerical simulation, data assimilation, calibration and uncertainty analysis, multi-criteria decision analysis, and agent-based or cellular automata models for dynamic systems.

Historically, the term emerged in the late 20th century with the growth of computer modeling and specialized software for water resources, and it has been advanced by international organizations such as UNESCO projects and the International Water Association. The field fosters the development of web-enabled modeling tools and platforms and encourages collaboration among engineers, hydrologists, computer scientists, and planners.

Education and impact include planning and real-time decision making for water managers, engineers, and policymakers, helping to improve reliability, efficiency, and sustainability of water systems.
