Hussar refers to a category of light cavalry that originated in Hungary in the 15th century. The name, derived from the Hungarian huszár, spread with the many European military reforms of the early modern era, and cognate terms appeared in several Central and Eastern European languages. The earliest Hussars were irregular border troops serving as scouts and raiders, but over time they were organized into regular light-cavalry formations.
From the 16th through the 18th centuries, hussars became a widespread and influential cavalry type in Europe.
