Huovutettu is a Finnish adjective meaning “felting” or “felted.” It describes textiles and objects that have been formed or bonded by the felting process, most often using wool but can involve other fibers. In Finnish textile craft, huovutetut items include hats, bags, slippers, and decorative or sculptural pieces.

Felting is a textile technique in which fibers are made to interlock and fuse, creating a dense fabric or solid form without weaving. There are two primary methods:

- Wet felting: layers of wool fibers are moistened with warm soapy water, then rubbed, rolled, or manipulated with heat and moisture. The scales on the wool fibers tangle and bond, producing a cohesive material.

- Needle felting: a dry method using barbed needles to repeatedly tangle fibers, enabling the creation of shapes and textured surfaces. This technique is popular for small sculptures and detailed embellishments.

Materials used are typically wool or wool-blend fibers; silk blends or other natural fibers may be incorporated for texture or sheen. Felting can produce flat fabrics as well as three-dimensional forms, and it is commonly employed in garments, accessories, home décor, and art objects. Care of huovutettu items varies with fiber content, but many wool felts are best washed by hand in cool water or spot-cleaned and dried flat to maintain shape.

Historically, felting is considered one of the oldest textile techniques, with evidence across Central Asia and the Middle East. In Finland, huovutus has a long tradition in folk craft, contributing to traditional hats, footwear, and decorative pieces, and it remains a popular practice in contemporary textile art and design.
