Hudömsningar, also known as skin cysts or epidermal cysts, are benign, slow-growing lumps that develop beneath the skin. They are typically filled with keratin, a protein component of skin cells, and are lined with epithelial tissue. Hudömsningar can occur on various parts of the body, most commonly on the face, neck, back, and scalp.

These cysts often originate from hair follicles or trauma to the skin, which causes the proliferation of epidermal cells into the dermis. The resulting cyst appears as a round, dome-shaped swelling that may be skin-colored, yellowish, or slightly darker. They are usually painless but can become tender or inflamed if infected.

Infections are a common complication, leading to redness, swelling, and sometimes pus formation. In such cases, the cyst may rupture, and there is a risk of local infection or abscess formation. While hudömsningar are generally harmless, they can cause cosmetic concerns or discomfort.

Diagnosis is predominantly clinical, based on physical examination. Imaging techniques are rarely required but can include ultrasound if the cyst's characteristics are unclear. Treatment typically involves surgical excision, especially if the cyst is infected, enlarging, or cosmetically bothersome. Complete removal of the cyst wall is important to prevent recurrence.

Although hudömsningar are benign, it is advisable to seek medical evaluation to confirm diagnosis and determine appropriate treatment. Malignant transformation is extremely rare, making most cases straightforward to manage.
