huchen
Huchen, scientifically known as Hucho hucho and commonly called the Danube salmon, is a large freshwater fish in the salmon family (Salmonidae). It is native to Europe, with a strong association to the Danube river basin, where it reaches some of its highest populations. Historically, it also occurred in other large European rivers, but its range has diminished due to habitat loss and other human impacts.
The species inhabits cool, well-oxygenated rivers and large streams, preferring deeper pools, runs, and gravel substrates
Spawning takes place in spring in gravel beds along rivers. Females lay eggs in gravel nests (redds),
Huchen has experienced substantial declines due to overfishing, habitat degradation, pollution, and barriers such as dams.
In addition to its ecological role, huchen is valued in sport fishing for its size and fighting
