A hometheater, also known as a home theater, is a system designed to reproduce cinema-like audiovisual entertainment in a residence. It combines a display, an audio system, and input sources to deliver immersive video and multi-channel sound. The goal is to provide high-quality imaging, realistic dialogue, and enveloping sound within a living space.

Display options include large LED/LCD televisions, OLED screens, or front-projection systems with a screen. Audio components range from compact soundbars to multi-speaker arrangements paired with an AV receiver. Common speaker configurations are 5.1 or 7.1, with an associated subwoofer; newer formats add height channels via Dolby Atmos or DTS:X.

Source devices include Blu-ray or UHD Blu-ray players, streaming devices, game consoles, PCs, and media servers. An AV receiver or processor decodes surround formats and routes video to the display. Some setups rely on a single soundbar and a streaming device for a simpler installation.

Room acoustics influence performance. Factors such as room size, seating layout, surface reflectivity, and subwoofer placement affect bass response and dialogue clarity. Acoustic treatment and proper cabling improve sound accuracy and reduce reverberation.

Setup and calibration involve adjusting speaker levels and delays, set crossover points, and applying room correction software. Place front speakers at ear height and angle toward the listener; position the center speaker near the display; surround speakers to the sides or rear; place the subwoofer where it sounds best in the room.

Over time, home theater setups have evolved with streaming, compact soundbars, and immersive formats, making high-quality cinema sound more accessible outside dedicated theaters.
