Homekasvu (Finnish: home = mold, kasvu = growth) refers to the development of mold and other fungi in indoor environments, particularly within buildings and on household materials. It commonly occurs where moisture accumulates or humidity remains elevated, and can affect porous substrates such as wood, drywall, textiles and insulation.

Typical causes include persistent dampness from water leaks, flooding, condensation, inadequate ventilation, and construction defects. Poor thermal insulation that creates cold surfaces and temperature differentials also promotes condensation and subsequent fungal growth. Common indoor molds belong to genera such as Aspergillus, Penicillium, Cladosporium and Stachybotrys, although many other species may colonize built environments.

Detection is usually by visible discoloration, fuzzy or slimy growths and musty odors; professional assessment can involve moisture mapping and microbiological sampling. Health effects vary with species, exposure level and individual susceptibility, ranging from nasal and respiratory irritation and allergic reactions to exacerbation of asthma. Certain molds produce mycotoxins, which have been associated with neurological and systemic symptoms in limited contexts; however, clinical significance depends on exposure dose and duration.

Prevention centers on controlling moisture through prompt repair of leaks, adequate ventilation, humidity control (typically below about 50%), proper building maintenance and design that avoids thermal bridges. Remediation may involve drying, cleaning with appropriate agents, removal and replacement of heavily contaminated materials, and use of HEPA filtration; large or recurrent infestations generally warrant professional intervention. Building codes, public health guidance and landlord-tenant regulations in many jurisdictions address moisture management and remediation responsibilities.
