Hjulkonstruktion, which translates from Danish and Norwegian as wheel construction, refers to the design, production, and assembly of wheels used on vehicles and machinery. It encompasses the transfer of load to the road, rotation of the wheel, and interaction with tires, brakes, and suspensions.

A typical wheel comprises a hub mounted on bearings or a bearing cartridge, a rim that holds the tire bead, and a connecting structure that transmits torque from the axle to the rim. In bicycles the rim is connected to the hub by spokes arranged in patterns such as radial or cross and tensioned to provide stiffness; in most cars, wheels are cast or forged discs that connect to the hub via a five- or six-bolt pattern or a center-lock system.

Materials vary by application. Bicycle rims are often aluminum or carbon fiber with steel or aluminum spokes; automotive rims are steel or aluminum alloy, sometimes carbon fiber in high-end performance. Manufacturing methods include casting, forging, and flow-forming for rims; hubs and spokes require precise machining and heat treatment.

Design considerations include strength, stiffness, weight, fatigue life, and compatibility with tires, brakes, and suspension. The interface with tires includes bead seating and tire pressure; brake systems may be integrated with the hub (drum, disc) or be rim-based. Wheel balancing, alignment (truing) and proper lug or bolt torque are important for safety.

Maintenance and safety are central to ljulkonstruktion. Regular inspection for cracks, wear, and corrosion is common practice, and standards define dimensions, bolt patterns, and load ratings to ensure reliability and interchangeability.
