Histonetail is a small, nocturnal mammal found in forested habitats across several temperate and subtropical zones. It is characterized by a long, semi-prehensile tail that ends in a tuft of longer hairs, which the animal uses for balance and grasping branches in dense vegetation.

Physical characteristics: Adults measure 11–16 cm in body length, with tails typically 14–22 cm long. They weigh roughly 40–70 g. Fur is soft and dense, usually olive-brown to gray on the back with a lighter underbelly. The tail is a prominent feature, enabling climbing and stabilization on narrow supports.

Distribution and habitat: Histonetail is found in mixed deciduous and evergreen forests, as well as forest edges and riparian corridors. Populations are fragmented across several regions, often associated with mid to high elevation woodlands. The species relies on tree cover for foraging and shelter.

Behavior and diet: It is primarily nocturnal and solitary, though pairs may form during the breeding season. Diet consists of insects, fruit, and seeds. It forages by climbing, leaping between branches, and occasional ground forays for fallen fruit.

Reproduction and lifecycle: Breeding occurs seasonally, with litters of 1–3 offspring. Gestation lasts about 40 days, and young remain with the mother for several weeks before becoming independent.

Ecology and conservation: Histonetail plays a role in insect control and seed dispersal. Conservation status is not formally evaluated; habitat loss and fragmentation from deforestation pose potential risks. Further field studies are limited, leaving many aspects of its ecology uncertain.
