Hippocampal–prefrontal interactions, sometimes written as hippocampalprefrontal, refer to the functional coupling between the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex. The hippocampus, located in the medial temporal lobe, supports episodic memory and spatial processing, while the prefrontal cortex—encompassing regions such as the dorsolateral, ventromedial, orbitofrontal areas, and the anterior cingulate—supports planning, decision making, and cognitive control. Anatomical connections linking these areas include the uncinate fasciculus, the cingulum, and thalamic relays such as the nucleus reuniens; direct monosynaptic hippocampus–PFC connections are limited in humans, with influence transmitted via these routes.
