Higherviscosity refers to materials with a relatively high resistance to flow compared with a reference fluid or standard condition. In fluid mechanics, viscosity describes the internal friction that resists motion between neighboring layers of a fluid. Dynamic viscosity, measured in pascal-seconds (Pa·s), and kinematic viscosity, measured in square meters per second (m²/s), quantify this property. A higher viscosity means a thicker fluid that flows more slowly under the same applied stress.

Viscosity is measured with viscometers or rheometers. Common types include capillary viscometers for Newtonian fluids and rotational or oscillatory rheometers for complex, non-Newtonian fluids. Temperature and pressure strongly affect viscosity; most liquids become less viscous as temperature rises. The relationship often follows an Arrhenius-like trend: mu(T) = A exp(Ea/RT).

Some fluids are Newtonian, with viscosity independent of shear rate. Many high-viscosity materials are non-Newtonian: they may shear-thin (become less viscous under shear) or shear-thicken (become more viscous). Thixotropic or rheopectic behavior adds time dependence to viscosity under constant shear.

Factors influencing higher viscosity include composition, molecular weight, polymers, dissolved solids, and particle content. Applications span lubricants, syrups and sauces, paints, cosmetics, and crude oil processing; viscosity modifiers tailor processing behavior, pumpability, and end-use texture.

Practically, high viscosity can increase energy requirements for pumping and processing but can improve lubrication and sealing. It can also hinder heat transfer and filling operations. In engineering and formulation, viscosity is controlled through temperature, shear conditions, and additives to achieve desired performance.
