Hevonen (Finnish for "horse") commonly refers to the domestic horse, Equus ferus caballus, a large ungulate mammal of the family Equidae. Horses evolved from small multi-toed ancestors in North America and were domesticated by humans around 4,000–6,000 years ago. The only truly wild equid extant is the Przewalski’s horse (Equus ferus przewalskii), while many populations of domestic horses have become feral.

Horses are herbivorous grazers with a single toe on each foot protected by a hoof. Adults vary widely in size and build among breeds, from small ponies to heavy draft horses, reflecting centuries of selective breeding for purposes such as riding, pulling, racing, and farm work. Typical lifespan ranges from 25 to 30 years, though this varies by breed, care, and environment.

Behaviorally, horses are social herd animals with established hierarchies and strong flight responses. Communication uses vocalizations, body language, and scent. Reproduction includes a seasonal breeding cycle in many climates, with a gestation period of about 11 months.

Horses have played central roles in transportation, agriculture, warfare, sport, and recreation, and continue to be used in therapy, competitive sports, and leisure riding. Modern care emphasizes nutrition, veterinary medicine, hoof care, dental care, and appropriate housing and exercise. Conservation and breed preservation efforts address rare breeds and feral populations. The horse remains culturally significant in art, literature, and national traditions across the world, including Finland, where hevonen holds historical and contemporary importance.
