Hereditärt describes traits and conditions that are transmitted from parents to their offspring through genes. It encompasses single-gene disorders with Mendelian inheritance, as well as complex traits influenced by multiple genes and environmental factors. Hereditary does not necessarily mean present at birth; some conditions manifest later in life due to genetic changes and interactions with lifestyle.

Inheritance patterns include autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive, X-linked, and mitochondrial inheritance. In autosomal dominant conditions, a single copy of a pathogenic variant from one parent can cause the trait or disease, whereas autosomal recessive conditions typically require two copies, one from each parent. X-linked traits often affect males more severely, with females usually being carriers. Mitochondrial inheritance is passed from mothers to all children via mitochondria in the egg.

Not all hereditary traits are diseases. Normal variations such as eye color, blood type, and certain metabolic differences are inherited through common genetic variation. The phenotype expressed by a person with a given variant is influenced by penetrance and expressivity; some people with a pathogenic variant may remain unaffected or show mild symptoms.

Genetic testing, family history assessment, and genetic counseling help individuals understand their risk and make informed decisions. Advances in genomics have revealed exceptions to classic patterns, such as polygenic traits, imprinting, and de novo mutations. Ethical considerations include privacy, discrimination, and the handling of incidental findings.
