Helmetmakers are craftsmen and manufacturers who design, forge, mold, assemble, and repair protective headgear. The category covers objects used for combat, sport, industry, and ceremonial display, ranging from historical armor to contemporary safety equipment.

Historically, helmetmaking fell within the broader trade of armorers. Metal helmets were forged from iron or steel, then tempered, decorated, and fitted with leather or cloth linings and suspension systems. Across cultures, helmet design reflected local needs and materials, from European closed helms to Asian lamellar and kabuto styles.

Modern helmetmaking blends traditional metalworking with polymer science and composite engineering. Contemporary shells are often thermoplastic or composite materials such as fiberglass, carbon fiber, or Kevlar, designed to absorb impact. Linings, chin straps, and retention systems provide fit and protection. Safety standards govern most applications, with different regimes for industrial, motorcycle, cycling, and sports helmets (for example industrial EN 397, motorcycle ECE or DOT/Snell, sports NOCSAE or ASTM/CE marks).

Applications include military and ceremonial use, motorsports, cycling, equestrian sports, ice hockey, football, construction, and diving. Bespoke and artisanal helmetmakers produce custom or reproduction pieces, while mass manufacturers supply widely used helmets.

Maintenance involves periodic inspection after impact, cleaning, and replacement of worn components. Restoration and conservation are common among historical helmets.
