Hegesztés is the Hungarian term for welding, a fabrication process that joins materials, usually metals or thermoplastics, by using high temperatures to melt the parts together and allowing them to cool, causing fusion. Welding is distinct from lower temperature metal-joining techniques such as brazing and soldering, which do not melt the base metal.

There are numerous welding processes, each with specific applications and advantages. Arc welding is a common category, utilizing an electric arc to create heat. Shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), also known as stick welding, uses a consumable electrode coated in flux. Gas metal arc welding (GMAW), or MIG welding, uses a continuously fed wire electrode and a shielding gas. Gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), or TIG welding, employs a non-consumable tungsten electrode and a shielding gas, often used for precise and high-quality welds.

Other welding methods include resistance welding, which uses electrical resistance to generate heat, and laser beam welding, which uses a focused laser beam. Thermoplastic welding involves heating the plastic surfaces until they melt and then joining them.

The selection of a welding process depends on factors such as the type of material being joined, the required strength of the joint, the thickness of the materials, and the available equipment. Welding is a fundamental process in manufacturing, construction, and repair across many industries, including automotive, aerospace, and shipbuilding.
