harvennettu

Harvennettu is a Finnish adjective meaning thinned or made less dense. It is formed from the verb harventtaa, to thin out or reduce density, with the past participle suffix -nettu. The word describes something that has undergone thinning and now has lower density or a more open arrangement. It is most commonly used in forestry, horticulture, and agriculture, but can also be applied more broadly to describe sparser patterns in other contexts.

In forestry and gardening, harvennettu refers to stands or plants that have been selectively thinned to improve growth, light access, and health of the remaining individuals. A harvennettu metsä or harvennettu taimikko denotes a forest or stand that has undergone thinning. The thinning operation itself is often called harvennus, while harvennettu describes the resulting state. In horticulture, harvennettu can describe shrubs or hedges from which some shoots have been removed to promote more vigorous growth or shape.

In broader or figurative use, harvennettu can describe reduced density in non-vegetative contexts, such as harvennettu liikenne (reduced traffic) or harvennettu asutus (sparsely populated area). While such usage exists, it is less frequent than its concrete application to vegetation, where the term is standard in manuals, reports, and everyday language.
