Nonvegetative is a broad term used in biology to denote forms, stages, or processes that do not involve vegetative growth, where vegetative growth refers to the expansion of plant tissue or asexual propagation through vegetative organs. The term is often used to distinguish reproductive or resting forms from the vegetative or growth phase.

In plants, vegetative reproduction encompasses growth and propagation by stems, leaves, roots, runners, and tubers. Nonvegetative, or generative reproduction, refers to sexual reproduction that produces seeds or spores, involving fertilization and genetic recombination. Examples include flowering plants producing seeds, ferns producing spores, and mosses.

In microorganisms, vegetative cells are metabolically active cells. Nonvegetative forms include dormant spores in bacteria and fungi or resting cysts in protozoa, which aid survival in hostile environments. Sporulation and spore formation are classic nonvegetative processes; germination returns the organism to a vegetative state when conditions improve.

In fungi, the distinction often appears as vegetative growth by mycelium versus nonvegetative reproductive structures such as spores and fruiting bodies. In algae and some protists, nonvegetative states include cysts or other resistant forms.
