A harpoonist is an individual skilled in the use of a harpoon, a projectile weapon typically consisting of a barbed spear. Historically, harpoonists were integral to whaling and other forms of large marine mammal hunting. Their primary role was to accurately throw or launch a harpoon at a target animal, aiming to secure it for subsequent capture or killing. The effectiveness of the hunt often depended heavily on the harpoonist's skill, as a well-placed harpoon could immobilize or fatally wound the animal, or at least ensure it remained tethered to the hunting vessel.

The design of harpoons varied significantly depending on the target species and the era. Early harpoons were often simple, barbed spears made of bone, stone, or metal. Later, more sophisticated designs incorporated detachable heads connected to the shaft by a rope or line, allowing the animal to be pursued after being struck. This innovation was crucial in preventing the loss of wounded whales, which could otherwise dive and disappear.

In the context of traditional whaling, the harpoonist occupied a position of significant importance and often a high degree of danger. They were typically positioned in the bow of a whaleboat, requiring them to be close to the powerful and potentially dangerous animal. The development of modern whaling, with its steam-powered vessels and explosive harpoon cannons, gradually diminished the role of the traditional harpoonist. While the practice of hunting with harpoons still exists in some limited contexts, it is far less prevalent than it was in previous centuries.
