A harmonizer is an electronic device or software that generates additional vocal harmonies by pitch-shifting copies of an input signal and blending them with the original sound. It can be implemented as a hardware unit, a software plug-in, or a standalone application used in live sound, studio production, or post-production to create a richer vocal texture without additional singers.

Harmonizers operate by identifying the pitch of the input and producing one or more translated copies at specified intervals relative to the input note. Modes vary from fixed-interval settings (such as a third or fifth above or below) to adaptive or intelligent modes that attempt to follow a musical key, scale, or chord progression. Many units offer formant preservation to keep voices natural-sounding, as well as controls for the number of harmony voices, routing, detuning for a chorus-like effect, and dry/wet mix. Some systems support MIDI input or key/scale selection to ensure harmonies remain in tune with the music.

Common categories include hardware vocal processors designed for live performance, software plug-ins used in DAWs, and standalone programs for recording environments. Notable examples in the field include legacy hardware from Eventide’s Harmonizer series, as well as modern products from TC-Helicon, Antares, and related software such as Harmony Engine or other pitch-shifting/vocal-harmony tools.

Applications often include backing vocals, thickening of lead lines, creative chorus effects, and simulated choirs. Limitations can include latency, artifacts from pitch-shifting, and a dependence on accurate key and scale settings to avoid dissonance. Advances continue in latency reduction, naturalness of voice synthesis, and user-friendly harmonic control.
