Handbroms is the term used in several Nordic languages for the parking brake, sometimes called the emergency brake. It is a vehicle control designed to keep the car stationary when parked and to provide an auxiliary braking function in an emergency. The handbroms is typically independent of the regular service brakes and acts on the rear wheels.

There are two main types. Mechanical handbrake systems use a hand lever or foot control connected by a steel cable to the rear-wheel brake mechanisms, often drum brakes. Pulling the lever engages a ratchet, pressing the rear brakes, and releasing it disengages them. Electronic parking brakes (EPB) replace or supplement the mechanical cable with electric actuators controlled by a switch or button, usually located in the center console. EPBs may include features such as auto-hold, hill-start assist, and automatic release when the accelerator is pressed.

Operation and use. The handbroms is intended for parking on slopes or when the vehicle is stopped for extended periods. It is not the primary braking system for normal driving, and it should be released before moving. In the event of a hydraulic brake failure, some systems allow limited use of the EPB, but drivers should rely on the service brakes if possible, and seek professional diagnosis if the EPB is not functioning correctly.

Maintenance and safety. Mechanical handbrakes require inspection of cable condition and tension, with occasional adjustment and replacement of worn components. Electronic parking brakes require diagnostic checks, and occasional software updates or actuator replacement by a professional. Regular checks help ensure reliable engagement and release.
