Hamulców is the Polish term for brakes, with hamulec meaning brake in the singular. In general, hamulców refers to the systems and devices that slow or stop moving vehicles by converting kinetic energy into usable energy, usually as heat, and in electric vehicles sometimes as electrical energy through regenerative braking. The term is used across contexts from bicycles to cars and heavy trucks.

A typical braking system consists of a pedal or lever, a mechanism to transfer force (such as a hydraulic or mechanical link), and friction elements that apply against a moving surface. Common components include pads or shoes, rotors (discs) or drums, calipers or wheel cylinders, brake lines or hoses, and a master cylinder that creates hydraulic pressure. Modern automobiles primarily use hydraulic disc brakes on at least one axle, with drum brakes still found on some rear axles or smaller vehicles.

Braking technologies vary. Hydraulic disc brakes are widespread in cars, offering strong, reliable stopping power and quick heat dissipation. Drum brakes, while older, remain in use on some vehicles and are valued for cost and certain applications. Heavy vehicles may employ air (pneumatic) brakes that use compressed air to actuate brake mechanisms. In electric and hybrid vehicles, regenerative braking recovers part of the energy while the friction brakes provide additional stopping power. Brake-by-wire and advanced electronic systems, such as ABS, traction control, and ESC, integrate braking with vehicle dynamics and safety features.

Maintenance is essential for hamulców: regular inspection of pad/liner thickness, rotor or drum wear, brake fluid condition, and leaks in lines. Proper maintenance ensures braking performance, safety, and longer component life.
