Hajutatuse refers to the process by which something is spread or distributed from a source to multiple locations. The term is used in Estonian to describe dispersal or dissemination across various domains, including biology, agriculture, epidemiology, geography, and information science. The root hajuta means to scatter or spread; hajutatuse is the corresponding noun form.

In ecology, hajutatuse describes how individuals, seeds, or propagules move away from their origin, influencing population dynamics and genetic structure. Dispersal can be active, such as an animal moving to a new area, or passive, such as seeds carried by wind, water, animals or by human transport. Dispersal can be natal, with movement before breeding, or breeding dispersal, shifting sites after reproduction. The distance and direction of dispersal shape range limits, colonization of new habitats, and the potential for gene flow between populations.

Researchers quantify hajutatuse with metrics such as dispersal distance, dispersal kernels, or mean squared displacement. Methods include mark–recapture tagging, genetic markers, or landscape-model approaches (diffusion, Levy flights, gravity models). Long-distance dispersal events are rare but ecologically important, often driving rapid range shifts or invasions.
