The gázpedált, commonly known as the accelerator pedal or gas pedal, is a critical control in a motor vehicle. It is a lever that the driver operates with their foot to regulate the engine's power output and, consequently, the vehicle's speed. Pressing down on the gázpedált increases the amount of fuel and air mixture supplied to the engine, causing the engine to run faster and produce more power. Releasing pressure on the pedal reduces the fuel and air supply, slowing the engine down.

The design and operation of the gázpedált have evolved significantly over time. Early vehicles used mechanical linkages to directly connect the pedal to the engine's carburetor. In modern vehicles, the gázpedált typically operates a sensor that sends an electronic signal to the engine control unit (ECU). This system, known as drive-by-wire or electronic throttle control, allows for more precise control of engine performance, including features like cruise control and traction control. The pedal itself is usually made of metal or durable plastic and is positioned to the left of the brake pedal. Its surface is often textured to provide grip for the driver's shoe. The resistance and travel of the gázpedált are calibrated to provide a responsive and intuitive driving experience.
