Glycanassisted refers to strategies and methods that employ glycans, the carbohydrate components of proteins and lipids, to facilitate a process in biology, chemistry, or materials science. The term is sometimes written glycan-assisted in the literature, but glycanassisted is also used as a compact form to describe these approaches. At its core, glycanassisted work leverages the specific recognition and physical properties of glycans to influence outcomes such as binding, stability, targeting, or assembly.

Two broad modes characterize glycanassisted approaches. One relies on glycan–protein interactions, especially between glycans and lectins, antibodies, or receptors, to mediate selective binding, purification, or detection. The other uses glycans as functionalized moieties on surfaces, particles, or polymers to alter solubility, biocompatibility, or self-assembly, thereby guiding processes like drug delivery, imaging, or materials fabrication. Glycanassisted techniques are often integrated with glycomics and glycoprotein research to design molecules with defined glycan structures for reproducible performance.

Applications include affinity purification of glycoproteins via lectin chromatography, glycan-directed targeting in vaccine delivery or therapeutic systems, and the development of glycan-based diagnostics and biosensors such as glycan microarrays. In materials science, glycosylation of polymers and nanoparticles can improve solubility and biocompatibility or enable controlled assembly. Challenges remain, including the structural heterogeneity of glycans, synthesis and characterization of defined glycans, and potential off-target interactions. Despite these hurdles, glycanassisted strategies continue to expand in biotechnology, medicine, and materials research.
