Glenoidefrakturer, also known as fractures of the glenoid cavity, refer to breaks in the rim or socket of the shoulder blade (scapula) that articulates with the head of the humerus (upper arm bone). These fractures are often associated with shoulder dislocations, particularly posterior dislocations, and can also result from direct trauma to the shoulder.

The glenoid cavity is a shallow depression that, along with the surrounding labrum, forms the socket for the shoulder joint. Fractures can vary in severity, from small avulsion fractures where a piece of bone is pulled away by a ligament or tendon, to larger, complex fractures involving a significant portion of the glenoid rim. These injuries can compromise the stability of the shoulder joint, leading to pain, instability, and limitations in range of motion.

Diagnosis typically involves a thorough physical examination and imaging studies. X-rays are often the initial diagnostic tool, but CT scans may be necessary to better visualize the extent and displacement of the fracture fragments. MRI can also be useful for evaluating associated soft tissue injuries, such as labral tears.

Treatment for glenoidefrakturer depends on the type and severity of the fracture. Non-displaced or minimally displaced fractures may be managed conservatively with immobilization, pain management, and gradual rehabilitation. However, displaced fractures that compromise shoulder stability often require surgical intervention. Surgical options may include open reduction and internal fixation, where the bone fragments are repositioned and stabilized with screws or plates, or arthroscopic repair techniques. Post-operative care involves a structured physical therapy program to restore strength, flexibility, and function to the shoulder.
