glaserad

Glaserad is a Swedish adjective meaning glazed; used to describe a ceramic, pottery, tile or glass object that has been coated with glaze and fired to form a glassy, non-porous surface.

Glaze is a glassy coating made from silica, fluxes and colorants. It is applied to a bisque-fired body by dipping, brushing or spraying, then fired in a kiln at temperatures suited to the glaze. The firing melts the glaze and fuses it to the surface, producing a smooth, often glossy finish; glazes can be transparent, translucent or opaque.

Uses and varieties: Glaserad surfaces are standard on tableware, tiles and sanitaryware, as well as decorative ceramics. Types include transparent, opaque and tin-glazed (majolica) finishes, among others. The choice of glaze affects color, texture and durability.

Defects and care: Common glaze flaws include crazing, pinholes and blistering. Proper glaze formulation and compatible body expansion are important to minimize problems. Glazed items should be washed with mild cleaners; avoid abrasive or sudden thermal changes that can stress the glaze.
