Gipszkartont is the Hungarian term for gypsum board, also known as drywall or gypsum plasterboard. It is a panel system used primarily for interior walls and ceilings. The board consists of a gypsum plaster core encased between paper facings, producing a lightweight, easy-to-cut surface that can be shaped to fit various layouts.

Common variants include standard gypsum boards for general interior use, moisture-resistant boards for bathrooms and damp environments, and fire-rated or impact-resistant boards for added safety or durability. In European construction, gypsum boards are produced in several thicknesses, commonly around 9.5 mm and 12.5 mm, with sheet sizes typically around 1200 by 2400 mm. Specialized versions may offer enhanced sound insulation or reinforced surfaces.

Applications and use

Gypsum boards are widely employed to form partition walls, ceilings, and curved surfaces in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. They allow rapid installation and a smooth finish that can be painted or wallpapered. Systems often combine gypsum boards with metal or wooden framing, screws for attachment, and joint compounds and tape to seal joints and create a seamless surface.

Limitations and considerations

Gypsum boards are generally unsuitable for exterior exposure without protective cladding due to moisture and weather sensitivity. Even in interiors, moisture-prone areas require appropriate variants and ventilation. They are recyclable and can be disposed of or repurposed in accordance with local waste guidelines.

Standards and sustainability

Gypsum boards conform to standards such as EN 520 in Europe, which specify composition, performance, and installation guidelines. Environmentally, gypsum is a natural material with relatively low embedded energy and potential for recycling at end of life.
