Ginekomastia is a medical condition characterized by the enlargement of breast tissue in males. It is a common condition that can affect men of all ages. The enlargement is due to an imbalance between estrogen and testosterone levels, leading to an increase in glandular tissue and sometimes fat deposition in the chest area.

Several factors can contribute to ginekomastia. These include hormonal changes during puberty, aging, and as a side effect of certain medications. Medications commonly associated with ginekomastia include those used to treat heart conditions, prostate cancer, and ulcers, as well as anabolic steroids. Certain medical conditions such as liver disease, kidney failure, and thyroid problems can also play a role. In many cases, the cause of ginekomastia is not identified and is referred to as idiopathic ginekomastia.

While ginekomastia is usually harmless, it can cause psychological distress for some individuals. In most cases, the condition resolves on its own, particularly in adolescent boys. If ginekomastia persists or causes significant discomfort, medical evaluation is recommended to determine the underlying cause and discuss potential treatment options. Treatment may involve addressing the underlying medical condition, adjusting medications, or in some cases, surgical intervention to remove excess breast tissue.
