Gimbalstabilointi refers to a technology used to maintain the orientation of a device or camera in relation to a fixed coordinate system, despite movements of the platform it is mounted on. The term originates from the concept of a gimbal, a mechanical device that allows rotation along one or more axes without altering the orientation of a mounted object. Modern gimbal stabilization systems are commonly found in drones, action cameras, and professional video equipment.

The primary function of gimbal stabilization is to eliminate unwanted motion, such as shaking or tilting, which can occur due to external factors like wind, movement of the operator, or vibrations. This is achieved through a combination of mechanical gimbals and electronic sensors, often including gyroscopes and accelerometers. These sensors detect changes in orientation and position, while motors adjust the gimbal’s position to counteract the movement, keeping the camera or device stable.
