Gildeonderwijs is education that was organized and delivered by craft guilds in Europe during the Middle Ages and the early modern period. Guilds were professional associations of artisans and merchants that regulated entry into a craft, quality standards, pricing, and mutual support. Gildeonderwijs aimed to train new practitioners and to maintain a high level of workmanship within a craft.

The apprenticeship was the core element of gildeonderwijs. A young learner entered a master’s workshop for several years, learning by doing under supervision and gradually taking on more complex tasks. After completing the apprenticeship, many would become journeymen, traveling to gain broader experience and to work for different masters. In some trades, a journeyman was required to produce a master piece to demonstrate skill before being admitted as a full member of the guild and, eventually, to establish a workshop of their own as a master.

Curricula covered practical shop floor techniques, use of tools and materials, measurement and geometry, and trade-specific processes. In addition, basic literacy or arithmetic, drawing, and business-related knowledge were often included, along with codes of conduct, ethics, and religious or civic duties. The guild also provided mutual aid, social networks, and protection against outsiders, creating a structured path for career advancement within a craft.

Decline followed industrialization and the rise of centralized schooling, though some training traditions persisted in dual education systems. In modern Dutch usage, gildeonderwijs is mainly a historical term; contemporary equivalents are vocational education and formal apprenticeships.
