Genitalrectal is a medical term used to describe the combined anatomy, assessment, and conditions involving the external genitalia, perineum, and the anorectal region (the rectum and anal canal). The term is used in specialties such as urology, colorectal surgery, gynecology, and oncology to refer to issues that span both genital and rectal areas.

Anatomy and scope: In males, the genital-rectal region includes the penis, scrotum, perineal tissues, prostate, and rectum; in females, it includes the vulva, vagina, perineum, and rectum. The pelvic floor muscles provide structural support across these regions, and nerves and blood vessels cross the same perineal space.

Clinical practice: Assessment may involve the digital rectal exam to evaluate the prostate in men and the rectal wall in both sexes. Gynecologic care may include rectovaginal examination to assess pelvic organs. Additional procedures such as anoscopy, endorectal ultrasound, MRI, or colonoscopy can be used to diagnose conditions in the genital-rectal area.

Common conditions and considerations: Genital-rectal symptoms may indicate prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, hemorrhoids, fissures, infections, inflammatory bowel disease with rectal involvement, pelvic floor disorders, or radiation-induced proctitis after pelvic therapy. Care involves patient privacy, informed consent, and appropriate chaperone use for exams when required.
