Generaatiot is the Finnish plural noun meaning generations, i.e., cohorts of people born within roughly the same time frame who experience shared historical moments that shape attitudes and behavior. The term is used in demography, sociology, marketing, and media studies. It derives from Latin generatio, passing through European languages; in Finnish, generaatiot stresses the social-structural grouping rather than kin-based lineages, and is often contrasted with sukupolvi, which can refer more generally to a family lineage.

In practice, the boundaries between generations are not fixed. Researchers and organizations propose different birth-year ranges for generations such as Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials (Gen Y), Generation Z, and Gen Alpha. National context, culture, and the metrics used—birth years, age, or life stage—shape these definitions.

Applications include studying shifts in values, technology adoption, work patterns, political opinions, and consumer behavior. Marketers tailor products and messaging to target generations, while policymakers consider intergenerational effects on pensions, education, and healthcare.
