Gemmologists are professionals who study gemstones, including their mineralogical properties, identification, grading, and evaluation for authenticity and value. They work to classify stones by species and variety, assess quality factors such as color and clarity, and determine whether stones are natural, treated, or synthetic. They may also attempt to determine geographic origin and detect common treatments or enhancements.

Most gemmologists work in gem labs, jewelry firms, or museums, or as independent consultants. Their work often results in written reports used by buyers, sellers, insurers, or courts. They collaborate with appraisers, dealers, mine researchers, and mineralogists.

Tools and methods include microscopical inspection of inclusions; refractometry; spectroscopic analysis (UV-Vis, infrared, Raman); density and refractive measurements; and advanced techniques such as X-ray diffraction or laser-ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry for origin studies. They distinguish natural stones from treated materials and from simulants and synthetic stones, and they identify possible enhancements such as heating, irradiation, diffusion, or coating.

Education and credentials are typically obtained through established gemological institutes such as the GIA, Gem-A, and IGI, earning diplomas or certificates in gemology. Professional organizations offer certification, continuing education, and standards for reporting. In many regions, gemmology is practiced in conjunction with mineralogy, crystallography, and materials science.

The field continues to evolve with laboratory-grown stones, improved detection of treatments, and methods to trace geographic origin, contributing to quality control, authentication, and scholarly research in mineralogy and materials science.
