Gasmolecule is a term used in physics and chemistry to denote an individual molecule that exists in the gaseous phase. In this state, molecules are widely spaced, and intermolecular interactions are infrequent and short-lived, making their behavior largely amenable to kinetic theory and the ideal gas model under many conditions.

Physically, a gasmolecule undergoes random translational motion. The average kinetic energy depends on temperature, and molecular speeds follow the Maxwell–Boltzmann distribution. The mean free path between collisions is relatively long, and diffusion, viscosity, and thermal conductivity arise from successive collisions with other gasmolecules. In many practical cases, properties can be approximated using PV = nRT for a mole of gas and the concept of partial pressures for each gasmolecule species.

Detection and measurement rely on techniques such as spectroscopy (infrared, ultraviolet, Raman), mass spectrometry, and absorption or emission methods. Atmospheric scientists, chemists, and engineers often treat gasmolecules as discrete entities when modeling gas-phase reactions, transport, and energy exchange.

Chemical reactions between gasmolecules occur via collisions, with reaction rates governed by collision theory and temperature-dependent rate constants described by the Arrhenius equation. At low to moderate pressures, ideal-gas assumptions hold well; at higher pressures, non-ideal behavior described by equations of state (for example, Van der Waals) may be needed.

Common examples of gasmolecules include nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, water vapor, and noble gases. The term emphasizes the gaseous state and is used primarily in educational or descriptive contexts rather than as a formal chemical designation.
