Fülzaj, also known as tinnitus, is the perception of sound in the absence of an external acoustic stimulus. It is commonly described as a ringing, buzzing, hissing, clicking, or roaring sound. The perceived sound can be constant or intermittent, and its loudness and pitch can vary. Fülzaj is not a disease itself but rather a symptom that can arise from various underlying conditions.

The causes of fülzaj are diverse. Exposure to loud noise, whether from a single intense event or prolonged exposure, is a frequent cause, often leading to damage of the delicate hair cells in the inner ear. Age-related hearing loss (presbycusis) is another significant factor. Certain medications, particularly ototoxic drugs like some antibiotics and chemotherapy agents, can also induce tinnitus. Other potential causes include earwax blockage, middle ear infections, Meniere's disease, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, head or neck injuries, and vascular abnormalities. In some cases, the cause of fülzaj may remain unidentified.

Diagnosis typically involves a thorough medical history, a physical examination, and hearing tests. Depending on the suspected cause, further investigations like imaging scans may be recommended. While there is no universal cure for fülzaj, management strategies focus on addressing the underlying cause and minimizing its impact on the individual's life. These may include sound therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), hearing aids if hearing loss is present, and lifestyle adjustments to reduce stress and improve sleep.
