Fóliasátrak, commonly translated as greenhouse tunnels or polytunnels, are agricultural structures primarily used for cultivating plants. They consist of a framework, typically made of bent metal tubes or PVC pipes, covered with a sheet of transparent plastic film, usually polyethylene. This covering creates a protected environment, allowing for controlled growing conditions regardless of external weather.

The primary function of a fóliasátor is to trap solar radiation, raising the internal temperature compared to the outside. This warmth extends the growing season, enabling earlier planting and later harvesting, and can even allow for year-round cultivation of certain crops. The plastic film also acts as a barrier against pests, diseases, and adverse weather such as heavy rain, hail, and strong winds, reducing crop damage and the need for pesticides.

Fóliasátrak come in various sizes, from small domestic garden structures to large commercial farming operations spanning many acres. They are relatively inexpensive to construct and maintain compared to traditional glass greenhouses, making them an accessible option for many farmers and gardeners. Ventilation is crucial for managing temperature and humidity, and this is often achieved through manual opening of the sides or ends of the tunnel, or with more sophisticated automated systems. The plastic film needs periodic replacement, typically every few years, due to degradation from UV exposure and mechanical stress.
