Fékfolyadék, also known as brake fluid, is a hydraulic fluid used in the braking systems of most vehicles. Its primary function is to transmit pressure from the brake pedal to the brake calipers or wheel cylinders, which then apply force to the brake pads or shoes, slowing or stopping the vehicle.

Fékfolyadék is a non-compressible fluid, meaning it does not readily lose volume under pressure. This property is essential for the efficient operation of hydraulic braking systems. When the driver presses the brake pedal, a master cylinder pushes fékfolyadék through brake lines. This fluid pressure is then amplified and applied to the braking mechanisms at each wheel.

These ratings indicate different boiling points and viscosity characteristics. Higher DOT ratings generally signify higher dry and wet boiling points, which are crucial for preventing brake fade, a condition where braking performance diminishes due to excessive heat.

Over time, fékfolyadék can absorb moisture from the atmosphere. This absorbed water lowers the boiling point of the fluid, increasing the risk of brake fade, especially under heavy braking conditions. Therefore, regular inspection and replacement of fékfolyadék are recommended as part of vehicle maintenance to ensure optimal braking performance and safety.
