Fázisállapotok, commonly referred to as states of matter, describe the distinct physical forms that matter can assume. These states are determined by factors such as temperature and pressure, which influence the arrangement and movement of the constituent particles (atoms, molecules, or ions).

The most commonly recognized fázisállapotok are solid, liquid, and gas. In a solid state, particles are tightly packed in a fixed, often crystalline, arrangement and vibrate about their equilibrium positions. Solids possess a definite shape and volume. In a liquid state, particles are still close together but can move past one another, allowing liquids to flow and take the shape of their container while maintaining a definite volume. In a gas state, particles are far apart and move randomly at high speeds, colliding with each other and the container walls. Gases have no definite shape or volume and will expand to fill any container.

Beyond these common states, other fázisállapotok exist. Plasma, often called the fourth state of matter, is an ionized gas containing a significant number of charged particles. It is found in stars, lightning, and fluorescent lights. Bose-Einstein condensates and fermionic condensates are exotic states of matter formed at extremely low temperatures, where quantum mechanical effects become macroscopic. The transitions between these fázisállapotok are known as phase transitions and are accompanied by changes in energy. For example, melting is the transition from solid to liquid, and boiling is the transition from liquid to gas.
