Foutbit is a term used in digital systems to describe a binary indicator that signals the presence of an error in a data unit, such as a word, frame, or block, or in a processing operation. The concept is common in Dutch technical literature and is closely related to error-detection and error-correction mechanisms.

In operation, a foutbit serves as a flag that alerts the system to an integrity problem. When a data word or transmission is checked and an error is detected, the foutbit may be set to indicate that the associated data cannot be considered reliable without further action. Depending on the design, this can trigger retransmission, error concealment, or the initiation of corrective procedures.

Common forms of error signaling related to foutbits include parity bits, checksums, cyclic redundancy checks (CRC), and more sophisticated error-correcting codes (ECC). Parity bits provide a simple detection mechanism, while CRCs and ECC can detect and, in some cases, correct errors. In practice, a foutbit may be part of a larger error-management scheme, with multiple bits indicating different error types or locations.

In hardware and software, foutbits are typically implemented as dedicated flip-flop or status bits in controllers, memory modules, and communication interfaces. They reside in status or error registers and are checked by control logic to decide whether data should be accepted, retried, or corrected.

Limitations exist: a single foutbit cannot guarantee error-free data. Parity detects only certain error patterns and cannot locate errors, while stronger codes add complexity and resource requirements. Applications span data transmission, memory systems, storage devices, and control networks.
