Fossilisaatiotavat, or methods of fossilization, describe the various natural processes by which the remains of organisms are preserved as fossils. These methods depend on factors like the organism's body composition, the environment in which it died, and the subsequent geological conditions.

One common method is permineralization, where groundwater rich in dissolved minerals seeps into the porous spaces of bone, shell, or wood. Over time, these minerals precipitate out of the water, filling the cavities and essentially turning the organic material into stone. Another process is replacement, where the original organic material is dissolved and simultaneously replaced by minerals. This can preserve fine details of the original structure.

Molds and casts are also important fossilization types. A mold forms when an organism's remains are buried in sediment, and then decay or dissolve, leaving a hollow impression of its shape. If this cavity is later filled with minerals or sediment, it creates a cast, which is a three-dimensional replica of the original organism.

In some cases, organic material can be preserved with little alteration. Carbonization, or compression, occurs when an organism is compressed under layers of sediment, squeezing out water and volatile compounds, leaving behind a thin film of carbon. This is common for plants and delicate marine organisms.

Trace fossils, such as footprints, burrows, and coprolites (fossilized feces), represent the activity of organisms rather than their body parts. These are preserved when the trace is buried and subsequently lithified. Lastly, preservation in amber, ice, or tar pits can result in the remarkably intact preservation of organisms, including soft tissues, due to the exclusion of oxygen and decomposers.
